"The pieces of furniture are the main characters in this tableau vivant," explains Massen. "The chairs become depedent on each other and their environment, which they interact with and exist with in numerous ways, creating all sorts of different situations." Sitting chairs is an example of a new direction for designers, working on families of objects rather than on stand-alone projects.
Design and the Elastic Mind, on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art from February 24-May 12, 2008, explores the reciprocal relationship between science and design in the contemporary world by bringing together design objects and concepts that marry the most advanced scientific research with attentive consideration of human limitations, habits, and aspirations.
